Misconception.
The misconception that I kept coming back to that I know almost everyone in my life knows is that you are supposed to wait 30 minutes after eating before you can swim or you will get cramps. Growing up in a lake town this is something my parents told me often. As an adult I now know that I, and everyone I have talked to about this misconception, have never gotten cramps from not waiting 30 minutes. This interests me because it's something I haven't actually ever looked into and I have no idea where this story ever gained its traction from. I wonder if back when this story first came about there was something different in people's diets that actually did cause them to cramp if they swam. Or if it was always some elaborate story our parents told us to get us to help clean up before we ran off and played. I could also never get a straight answer on what exactly would cramp, I always thought it would be my stomach since it was related to food but then heard from others that the reason they got was because they would get cramps and then not be able to swim and might drown, so that made me think maybe my legs would cramp. Either way as a 30 year old that has tested this countless times I can confidently say that it is just not true, but still a funny thing to remenince about.
